Make walnut ink

You can make old fashioned walnut ink using the method listed below

1.  Wrap walnut shells (10+) in a heavy cloth

2.  Place walnuts shells against a hard surface (concrete block, rock

     and break using a hammer

3.  In a saucepan add the crushed shells to 1 cup of water and bring to

a simmer for 45 minutes until the water turns dark brown

4.  Remember to check the saucepan frequently to make sure it does

     not boil dry

5.  Once the liquid is cool pour through a seive into a bowl

6.  Add 1/2 tsp white vinegar and 1/2 tsp salt and then stir till the salt

     is completely dissolved

7.  Pour the finished ink into small bottles that have tight fitting lids

Since this ink is made for use with quill pens, I think it should work with a dip pen, but I don’t

think it will be a suitable ink for use in fountain pens (use at your own risk).
